Upstairs and Downstairs: A History of the Country House Servant

Upstairs and Downstairs: A History of the Country House Servant, due to be published by John Murray, 2009

This lively, general history of the English country house servant looks at 600 years of British country house life, and helps us understand the activities and populations of country houses over the centuries, and how this was expressed in the daily life of a household and in the architecture of the country house. Drawing on both published and unpublished sources, this book will celebrate the authentic voice of the servants themselves, through extracts from memoirs, letters and other records, and other evidence, and explore some of the elaborate rituals and hierarchies of noble households right up until the late 20th century.
